As travelers waited for their luggage at the baggage claim carousel of a Florida airport, a gunman opened fire Friday afternoon, killing at least five people and injuring eight others, Broward County Sherrif's office said.
The shooting took place in Terminal 2 of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International airport outside of the TSA checkpoint.
The airport has since been placed on lockdown.
Stephanie Auclair who was in the airport with her parents at the time of the shooting describes a chaotic scene.
“People left there stuff inside and just ran. It was a total panic. It was scary," she told PEOPLE.
According to witnesses the shooter described as a "slender" white male with dark hair took a knee before opening fire, shooting at least 13 people with a handgun, TMZ reports.
Cell phone footage taken shortly after the shooting shows the chilling aftermath.
The shooting suspect has been taken into custody. No word yet on what prompted the massacre as thousands of travelers and airport employees remain on lockdown at the airport and on the tarmac, NBC Miami reports.
This is horrible. Stay tuned for updates.
