Black-Owned 'Mama Biscuit' Goes National After Scoring Distribution With Walmart And Amazon

Lesley Riley, CEO & Founder of Mama Biscuit is the brain behind the operation as started the brand in her own kitchen.

We are talking about sheer black excellence here, in one of the tastiest ways possible - gourmet biscuits, handmade - and something that has already hit 55 stored in nine states since October last year.

Lesley Riley, the founder of Mama Biscuit’s Gourmet Biscuit Company, is so successful that people are now referring to her as "Mama Biscuit".

The family-friendly, all-natural, gluten-free gourmet baking company had started out just with a tribute to her grandmother's 127-year old family recipe for mouth-watering southern biscuits.

And now she is celebrating the companies 4th anniversary with distribution sought by some massive brands like Walmart, Sam’s Club, Whole Foods, Amazon, and Wegmans.

It was 2015 that Lesley Riley launched her online gourmet baking company. People around her know her for being a recipe developer, and she has also been a former restauranteur.

After trial, tribulation, and rejection from traditional banks to secure funding to launch her business, Riley self-funded Mama Biscuit®.

Back in 2013, Lesley auditioned for Fox's MasterChef, a popular show where contestants from around the country are put through a series of challenging elimination rounds. Lesley, however, never actually made it on the show because she got cut from during her audition.

But she was not going to give up on her love and passion for cooking and making amazing recipes.

What might have made a lot of brands interested in Lesley's biscuits is the fact that she and her team make small batches, premium all-natural foods with only the finest, freshest, ingredients. Their biscuits have no trans fats, no preservatives, no artificial flavoring, no coloring, and no dyes.

"My concept and core mission is built off a simple back-to-basics method of quality over quantity."

Mama Biscuit is a woman- and minority-owned business that Riley started in her own kitchen. It was one of 500 companies and 750 products represented at one of Walmart's Open-Call events.

Mama Biscuit® will expand its services to include easy monthly cooking/baking lessons for children and millennials curated by a former White House Chef.

“My first baking creation for retail was an Apple Pear Pistachio Gourmet Biscuit, this cleaner, healthy and delicious breakfast/dessert item quickly became an instant hit. Through consistency, word of mouth and persistence, we have secured national distribution from major brands," she told BlackNews.com.

This is what keeps black girl magic thriving and growing. Riley states, “I want to give my customers and future customers the gift of eating our Artisan sweet, savory, gluten-free gourmet biscuits. I ship them all over the United States and would love for each household to experience them.”

Riley donates biscuits to local food pantries, such as the Department of Aging and Frederick Rescue Mission for families. “I never take anything for granted. No matter what opportunities come your way always remain humble. Opportunities aren’t given to everyone,” pleads Riley.
