Childish Gambino Cries Honoring Nipsey Hussle, Mac Miller In An Emotional Speech At Coachella

Donald Glover's musician alter ego made some heavy reflections on life and what it means to be alive.

After his Friday night performance at the  Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Childish Gambino urged fans to live in the moment in a moving speech. One of the most influential and celebrated artists, actor Donald Glover reflected on the loss of his father and the rappers Nipsey Hussle and Mac Miller.

Glover appeared to cry as he reflected on death and mortality. “What I’m starting to realize is all we really have is memories at the end of the day,” Glover said after mentioning he lost his father, Nipsey, and Miller.

Mac Miller, a friend of Glover's, had died from an accidental drug overdose of fentanyl and cocaine in September 2018. The autopsy report had stated that he died of mixed drug toxicity - an accidental overdose of multiple drugs.

An empty bottle of alcohol on the nightstand and white powder residue on a rolled up $20 dollar bill in his pocket were found, in addition to a slew of prescription pills in his bathroom.
During a concert in Chicago last September, Glover had opened about his friendship with the late rapper.

"He was the sweetest guy,” he had told the audience as he recalled their friendship. And later he had performed riot and dedicated the song to Miller. “So I just wanna say ‘I love you, Mac.’”

And later in 2018, Glover lost his father in December. Glover made the announcement about Donald Glover Sr.’s death during the This Is America tour at Los Angeles’ the Forum.
“I lost my father a couple of weeks ago,” Glover had said, as a fan captured in a Reddit video. “And I wanted to play him some of the new songs. But he didn’t want to hear them because he was like, ‘I know they’ll be great.’ “

And last month, Nipsey, who had collaborated with Childish Gambino, was shot and killed in South Los Angeles. Glover spoke about how losing so many people that he was close to, translated for him in the speech at Coachella.

“There’s a hundred-thousand of you out here right now. There’s a good chance that some of y’all, at least one of y’all, won’t see next week,” he said. “So what I’m saying is, while you’re here, while we’re here, feel something, and pass it on.”

Before performing his next song, Glover appeared to wipe tears from his eyes. “This song is for all of you guys,” he added. “This song is for everything we’ve lost and everything we stand to gain in the future. Because the future is now.”

2018 had been a tough year of Glover. During his concert in December last year he had mentioned that he “lost a lot of good people in 2018,”

In December 2018, Childish Gambino - the musical alter-ego Donald Glover - had said that he's retiring after his ‘This Is America’ Tour and his forthcoming album.
