New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a briefing with reporters.
The USA has already leaped ahead of Spain in terms of confirmed Coronavirus cases with more than 35,000 positive cases identified so far. The number of deaths has gone above 450 and it is expected to rise as more and more cases are being confirmed every day. Countries worldwide have already begun the process of self-isolation and a lot of them are on the verge of the complete shutdown until the problem abates.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, following the analysis of the situation in New York, said at a press briefing on Sunday that the lockdown is not a temporary thing, for now, as the pandemic is far from over. He said: "This is not a short term situation. This is not a long weekend. This is not a week." He added: "It is going to be four months, six months, nine months."
As reported by Yahoo News, Cuomo said: "The timeline — nobody can tell you, it depends on how we handle it — but 40%, up to 80% of the population will wind up getting this virus, all we're trying to do is slow the spread. But it will spread, it is that contagious."
According to Yahoo News, "there are 15,168 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 76 deaths in New York state, up from 10,356 on Saturday – a nearly 50% increase. More than 9,000 cases are in New York City. To put that in perspective, Washington state, an early hotspot for the coronavirus, has reported about 1,800 cases."
People are being advised to take all the necessary precautions seriously and not to engage in rumor-mongering or panic buying. Meanwhile, the hospitals are facing the impossible task of coping with huge numbers of patients and are desperately looking for more support. The best possible citizen-support, however, could be to keep yourself safe and remain indoors, unless absolutely necessary.
