Illinois Teenager Posts 'Slave For Sale' Ad On Craigslist With A Black Classmate's Picture, Arrested For Hate Crime

The teenager has been arrested for hate-crime.

A 14-year-old boy, a student of Naperville Central High School, is facing charges of hate crime after he posted a picture of a black classmate on Craigslist with the caption 'Slave for sale (Naperville).'

As reported by Chicago Tribune, the black classmate who is also a freshman at the school was having lunch at the same table as the white teenager and that was when the white classmate took his picture. He later posted the image on Craigslist with the caption and some other abusive language.

The prosecutors believe that his actions are "serious and aggravating" and could put the victim at risk. The judge hearing the case ordered the kid to remain as far away as possible from the victim saying: "It wouldn’t be a bad idea for you to stay as far away as possible while you’re at school."

The Naperville school district released a statement condemning the act and said: "As educators, we have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, especially those from marginalized and vulnerable student groups. Racial discrimination and hateful acts are never acceptable."

The ad has since been removed from the website and the youth is under suspension. He is scheduled to meet with the victim at the principal's office where, according to the youth's lawyer, he would formally apologize for his actions.
