Jamela Acheampong launched the brand Kahmune to cater to women with the skin color of all tones.
The nude-toned footwear was not really present for women of all color tones and usually catered to very few. Jamela Acheampong decided to change that by launching her brand Kahmune. Launched in 2017, the company had a simple tagline, "10 Shades, 1 Mission".
According to their website, "Kahmune [ com·mune ] is a luxury line offering an array of footwear styles designed to match the skin tones of ALL women." They have named each shade after the women with that skin tone who inspired their journey.
The brand says, "At present, we offer our styles in 10 colors ranging from the fairest of skin tones to the darkest of brown. Our color palette is inspired by the diverse regions of the world. Each shade is named after the women whose skin tones have inspired us throughout this journey."
In her own words, Jamela Acheampong says, "We are a solution to the age old fallacy that "nude" refers to a specific color. It's time for a change. It's my goal to ensure that ALL women have "nude" products that celebrate the diversity of the human complexion."
She was inspired by the idea to find footwear which matched her skin tone but she couldn't find the exact shade. It is then that she started developing shades for footwear which could cater to all color tones. Their website also speaks about the value which this brand intends to reflect: "We are a brand with a clear message. Representation matters. Diversity matters. Inclusion matters. We celebrate it all!
