Numerous scientists have warned that the effectiveness of the drug against Coronavirus is untested and not safe.
As the U.S. fights the virus, the desperate need for a cure or a vaccine is becoming evident by the day. The need to find a scientific solution for the pandemic that is safe for people is the top priority for most medical researchers right now and multiple inter-country agencies are also working hard to develop a medicine that can help.
But the president of the country, Donald Trump, has not stopped his relentless promotion of Hydroxychloroquine, touting it as some kind of a miracle cure, and this may be putting even more lives in danger. As reported by the NYT, at a press briefing on Sunday, he again promoted the medicine and said: "So what do I know? I’m not a doctor. But I have common sense." He used the phrase "What do you have to lose?" five times in his briefing, emphasizing again that he believed it can cure COVID 19.
There have been several anecdotal instances of the drug showing some positive effects on COVID patients but it hasn't been tested enough and is not scientifically proven to fight the virus. Reports had also emerged of people dying after consuming the drug because they heard the president speak about it so highly.
In fact, Dr. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease specialist, spoke on Fox News saying: "I think we’ve got to be careful that we don’t make that majestic leap to assume that this is a knockout drug." He added: " We still need to do the kinds of studies that definitively prove whether any intervention, not just this one, any intervention is truly safe and effective."
